Staking Strategy – Devonport, Sunday 1 June UPDATED
Winter begins with an eight-race card in Devonport on the synthetic.
The first of the day is scheduled for 11:40.R1 Ladbrokes Form Genius Maiden, 1150m
The 2yo Roundle Park (12) is the one to beat. He was very good on debut in a high rating race and then went around as an odds-on favourite on the back of that effort and ran very well again dropping back in trip. SIENA WOLF (10) the clear danger. Should be at peak fitness now third run back coming off a lengthy break. She was held up at a key stage second up at Hobart and should've finished a bit closer. GEEGEE AUNTY JESS (8) has been around the money all starts this preparation and shouldn't be far away again. LEO DAVINCI (4) finished on the heels of the placegetters this track and trip first up and has been mixing his distances since. This does look a harder race though. There was little separating the 2 newcomers ISSIMA LOUVRE (3) and HELP FROM ABOVE (9) at the recent Longford trials in one of the slowest heats of the morning. ZULU FIELDS (11) has first 4 claims.Staking Strategy: Roundle Park's wide gate was the only slight query but scratchings have helped a lot. Siena Wolf clear second pick. 5 units to win ROUNDLE PARK (12)
R2 The Stables At Spreyton Benchmark 64 Handicap, 1880m
Earendel (1) is on the quick back-up from Hobart last Sunday. The blinkers went on there for the first time and after enjoying a good trail in transit he went on to win quite easily in a handy benchmark race. AL MAXIMUS (3) continues to race well and will appreciate getting back out to this trip. He did look a good risk here last outing over the 1650m. FASHION FOX (6) is another that is never far away in these races. SUGOI LEGEND (5) should be close to peak fitness now fourth run in. He was doing his best work late when placed behind Sh'bourne Midnight at his latest. MAKEWHOLE (4) has come across from the mainland and presents first up on the back of 2 trials. He usually comes to hand pretty quickly. It's hard to line him up with the locals. Market's the best guide.Staking Strategy: Earendel had a gear change and won well at Hobart. Has drawn well again and looks a great chance to go back-to-back. 2 units to win EARENDEL (1)
R3 Goodstone Group Class 1 Handicap, 1009m
Competitive race around the top 3-4 hopes. Platinum Reggae (6) won impressively this track and trip at her latest. Has been kept fresh for this. Can go with it. SIMPLY DEEP (1) is also chasing back-to-back wins. He controlled the race leading all the way here on debut. Has drawn well and should find the front again. OHSHE'STROUBLE (3) looks the other key player. She has trialled up nicely and should be very competitive at her first local start. HIGHLAND DUEL (2) is better than what he produced returning from a break and gets blinkers back on second up.Staking Strategy: Good race. Platinum Reggae won with a bit in hand last start and Ohshestrouble has trialled up nicely for her first local start. 2 units to win OHSHE'STROUBLE (3) and PLATINUM REGGAE (6)
R4 Simons Carpets Devonport Benchmark 76 Handicap, 1009m
Anyways Roxie (1) resumes. She clearly went to a new level last prep and is still untapped. The synthetic for the first time is the only query. WARICA (6) last win was at this track and trip. There's more substance to this race but he's drawn well and will get his chance. PERIWINKLE (5) will lead and take catching. She's well suited this venue. BOLD INSTINCT (2) was successful last start leading all the way here over 1150m and has solid claims again despite dropping back to the 1009m.Staking Strategy: No knock at all on Anyways Roxie but Periwinkle should be able to get a comfortable lead here and might take some catching. 2 units to win PERIWINKLE (5)
R5 Kevin Sharkie Class 2 Handicap, 1350m
Bayside (1) was just no match for his stablemate last start in same grade. He's been very close at his past couple. Should find the lead easily and is the one to beat. RICH GLOW (2) lost the rider at his latest but his prior form was competitive in similar company and gets a handy claim. RUBICK'S AFFAIR (5) did have all the favours to win this track and trip last start but it wasn't a bad race and is amongst the chances. THE PRAYER (6) gets a tongue tie on from a good gate and could be some value in the race but does need to lift on recent efforts. LION'S TOOTH (4) settled at the rear and wasn't far away last time. Has a better gate this time around.Staking Strategy: Bayside won on debut and has just been collared at two subsequent runs. Should come across and lead these and back to the 1350m suits. 5 units to win BAYSIDE (1)
R6 Tasmanian Horse Transport Class 6, 1350m
Chicane (2) looks the hardest to beat. He appreciated dropping back to this trip last start and won a strong Benchmark 68 race. GEEGEES CITY BOY (5) should be close to his best third run in and looms as one of the main threats. NIGHT PEOPLE (6) won well resuming but failed to fire second up. He was a big winner at Ballarat last year on the synthetic at his only try leading all the way. Suspect they will adopt similar tactics here. DAYAN STAR (3) is always around the mark in these races and has to respected.Staking Strategy: Chicane has had a good prep and can win again. Night People is a proven performer on the synthetic and looks a genuine threat. 2 units to win CHICANE (2) and NIGHT PEOPLE (6)
R7 Lending 4 U Bm60 Handicap, 1150m
Thoros Of Myr (1) dominated his rivals this track and trip second up, bolting in by 5.5 lengths in quick time. Great hope again. STARS IN THE NIGHT (4) is racing consistently and is always thereabouts in these races. ADACHI (5) resumes for a new stable. He's got his share of ability and has drawn out but can run well. GUNSHIP (6) didn't handle the 1350m or leading or both last start. His form prior stacks up well for a race like this. CORNELIAN BAY (3) was solid first up and strips fitter and draws for the right run.Staking Strategy: Thoros Of Myr quickly found form second up, running his rivals ragged in quick time. More depth here but the one to beat. 2 units to win THOROS OF MYR (1)
R8 Stall Gate Kiosk Bm68 Handicap, 1650m
Spring Bean (3) is likely to go around a warm favourite again. He's had a good preparation and it's hard to see him not figuring in the finish. GEE GEE CAN WIN (4) is coming along well and looks ready for this trip third up. KIREINA MARUBRAH (5) looks the likely leader and wasn't far behind Spring Bean 2 starts back. Forgive last start when wide throughout. SHY GUY (2) had the gun trail winning this track and trip a fortnight ago and should get a similar run in transit. CARNEROS (1) can place but happy to risk from a win perspective. MIGHTYMAXI (6) recent form doesn't good enough to be winning.Staking Strategy: Kireina Marubrah meets Spring Bean 4.5kgs better for a 1.7 length defeat two starts ago and gets her chance to the turn the tables. 2 units to win KIREINA MARUBRAH (5)
