Spring Bean chases autumn hat-trick

Almost eight months out from the 2026 Ladbrokes Devonport Cup, trainer Glenn Stevenson believes he has a contender in his ranks.

The winner of the last two Devonport Cups, Glenn Stevenson thinks that the in-form 5-year-old gelding Spring Bean could be worthy of a shot at the title, and he will be looking to add to his resume when he chases a hat-trick of wins in Devonport on Sunday.

"You try and get a win in a Golden Mile or something like that, get in on the minimum and you're on the up," said Stevenson, who has won back-to-back hometown cups with Ashy Boy.

On Sunday, Spring Bean steps out in a BM68 over 1350m, his third consecutive run at the track and distance.

"He might be looking for further now, but there's a mile in a fortnight.

"The distance is a query, but if they run along and they break up, he's a big chance, but if the tempo is slow, we may need a bit of luck."

Spring Bean has drawn barrier 1, and with Anthony Darmanin not riding at the meeting, he will be replaced by Codi Jordan, who comes off a winning treble at the previous Devonport program on 4 May.

After winning a maiden and maiden/class 1 during his initial campaign for the Stevenson stable, the trainer isn't surprised by what Spring Bean has shown this time in.

"He's bigger and stronger, and he can stay, so the future looks bright."

It was a stable quinella for Stevenson last time Spring Bean stepped out a fortnight ago, beating home Steele My Sunshine, who is Stevenson's only other runner on Sunday's program. The 5yo mare will compete in the final race of the day, a Class 2 over 1650m.

"She drops back from a class 4 to a class 2, and she's had a few barrier issues, so it's good that she's drawn out (barrier 11).

"If we can sit outside the lead, or even cross and sit outside the lead, she should be a chance as she hasn't gone backwards since last start."
