Melbourne Cup favourite and triple Group 1 winner step out at Warwick Farm trials

Two of the expected stars of the upcoming Spring Carnival took the biggest steps of their preparations at Warwick Farm on Friday morning.

Melbourne Cup favourite Sir Delius and glamour filly Lady Shenandoah both had their first trials of the campaign.

Lady Shenandoah took part in a star-studded 900-metre trial that also included Private Eye and Ceolwulf.

The Chris Waller-trained filly was given as easy time of things at her first public hitout since her Group 1 Coolmore Classic win, coasting to the line under light riding from James Mcdonald to finish sixth, beaten just under 7-1/2 lengths.

The trial was won by the Bjorn Baker-trained Bonita Queen, who finished 2-3/4 lengths clear of Private Eye with his Joe Pride-trained stablemate Ceolwulf not knocked around in last position.

Lady Shenandoah, a winner of her past five starts, including the Flight Stakes and Surround Stakes at Group 1 level, is $4.50 second favourite behind stablemate Autumn Glow ($3.50) for the $10 million Golden Eagle.

Lady Shenandoah's trial was the second of the day, following the 1000m hitout that was won by Doncaster Mile placegetter Encap.

Sir Delius and his Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained stablemate Alalcance both took part in that trial but settled out the back and were allowed to coast to the line.

Sir Delius, whose only Australian start realised a win in the Group 3 Chairman's Handicap at Doomben, finished fourth, beaten just under eight lengths, while beaten Sydney Cup favourite Alalcance trailed home the field 11-1/2 lengths from Encap.

Sir Delius, a son of Frankel who finished midfield in last year's Arc De Triomphe, shares the top line of betting with Via Sistina at $11 for this year's Melbourne Cup.
