Schiller to miss Qld carnival with back injury
Tommy Berry is the new rider for BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes favourite Gallo Nero, replacing the injured Tyler Schiller.
Jockey Tyler Schiller will be sidelined for at least six weeks after it was confirmed he had suffered a fractured vertebrae in a race day incident at Canterbury.
The senior Sydney hoop landed heavily on his back when he was thrown from his mount shortly after leaving the mounting enclosure prior to the first race on Wednesday.
After being attended to by on-course paramedics, he was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where tests revealed a mid-spine fracture to his T8 vertebrae.
He was discharged later that evening before confirming the news on social media.
"Fractured T8, out for six weeks," Schiller said on X.
Schiller had been due to ride at Eagle Farm on Saturday where his mounts included Gallo Nero, the early $4.40 favourite for the BRC Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m).
The colt's trainers Hawkes Racing confirmed Tommy Berry as his replacement, while Berry also picked up the ride on Payline in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m).
Schiller's injury rules him out of the remainder of the Brisbane winter and is likely to keep him sidelined until at least the middle of July.
Blake Shinn has also confirmed he will miss the remainder of the Queensland carnival with a foot injury.
