Racing SA's Equine Welfare Fund: A Lifeline for 526 Horses Amid Severe Drought
Although it may be difficult to imagine after the rain we've recently experienced, our state continues to grapple with the effects of prolonged drought. During these challenging times, Racing SA's welfare team stepped up to provide much-needed assistance to our equine community via the Drought Relief Assistance Package.
The Drought Relief Assistance Package offered critical support to 526 horses. Over the eligible 4-week period, 176 applicants received funding to help address the rising feed costs and limited pasture access for their thoroughbreds. The program was achievable thanks to the Racing SA Equine Welfare Fund, with 1% of South Australian thoroughbred prizemoney directed to providing valuable Equine Welfare support and initiatives such as this one.
David Mews of Windamere Horse Haven highlights the impact of this industry support, "It's certainly gone a long way. This has enabled us to source quality hay and feed suitable for the thoroughbred diet."
While these are tough conditions, it's heartening to see the love for our horses, both on and off the track, and offer support to the caring owners and volunteers who are dedicated to their well-being.
"Since 2020, we've been working with Thorough Care SA. Their dedication has been ongoing, it's really positive to see the racing industry supporting off-the-track thoroughbreds," Mews added. "We're very thankful to Racing SA and the Thorough Care team."
This initiative underscores Racing SA's commitment to the welfare of thoroughbreds throughout their lives, ensuring they receive proper care, especially in challenging times.
