Racing NSW Handicapper comments - 2023 TAB Epsom Handicap

Weights for the TAB Group 1-Epsom Handicap (1600m) - Saturday, 30th September 2023.

A total of 104 nominations have been weighed for the 158th running of The TAB Group 1-Epsom Handicap (1600m) to be staged at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 30th September 2023.

This year's edition of the The TAB Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) will be run for $1,500,000 with a 50.0kg minimum weight (48kg minimum for 3yos).

The honour of topweight this year has been given to four-time Group 1 winner, Zaaki (GB) with 60.0kg. Zaaki (GB) has won the 2021 Group 1-Doomben Cup (2000m), 2021 Group 1-Underwood Stakes (1800m), 2021 Group 1-Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) and 2022 Group 1-Mackinnon Stakes (2000m)

Next in line on 59.0kg is Alligator Blood, a five-time Group 1 winner of the 2020 Group 1-Australian Guineas (1600m), 2022 Group 1-Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), 2022 Group 1-Underwood Stakes (1800m), 2022 Group 1-Cantala Stakes (1600m) and 2023 Group 1-Futurity Stakes (1400m).

Another notable nomination is Arapaho (Fr), winner of the 2023 Group 1-Tancred Stakes (2400m), and has been allocated 57.5kg.

The highest weighted mare with 57.0kg is the four-time Group 1 winner Alcohol Free (Ire). The list of wins includes the 2020 Group 1-Cheverley Park Stakes (1207m), 2021 Group 1-Coronation Stakes (1603m), 2021 Group 1-Sussex Stakes (1609m) and 2022 Group 1-July Cup (1207m).

There are three 3yo horses nominated, including 2023 Group 1-JJ Atkins Plate (1600m) winner King Colorado. All three 3yo horses have been allocated the 48.0kg minimum.

The 2023 Group 2-Tramway Stakes (1400m) winner Pericles has been allocated 56.0kg and the 2023 Group 2-Theo Marks (1300m) winner Golden Mile with 55.0kg are currently the only two horses exempt from ballot.
