Prince shines on a gloomy Devonport day

On a wet and gloomy day in Devonport on Sunday, the heavily supported Prince of Khatun shone bright when victorious in a 3YO Maiden (1150m).

An impressive trial winner at the track earlier in the week, Prince Of Khatun was backed from $2 to start a prohibitive $1.30 favourite and gave punters little cause for concern with a dominant front-running display.

The Adam Trinder-trained three-year-old gelding had two starts as a two-year-old, the most recent being an unplaced run in the Listed Elwick Stakes in January.

"He showed good tactical early speed, which we've always known he had, but the most pleasing part of the race, other than the result, was that he was nice and strong late," said Adam Trinder.

By Stratosphere from Khatun, Prince of Khatun is the first horse bred by owner Wayne Roser, and the result earned just over $40,000 in prize money thanks to the Tasbred bonus associated with the race.

The poor weather eventually claimed the final two races on the card, with races seven and eight abandoned due to poor visibility.

Erica Byrne Burke rode the first two winners of the day, adding Blonde Star ($6.50) to her win aboard Prince of Khatun. Anthony Darmanin later equalled that tally with what would end up as the final two winners, partnering Adachi ($6) and Zoete's Rock ($6.50).

The BM68 (1150m) that was abandoned has been added to this Sunday's Devonport program, while the maiden/class 1 (1880m) wasn't re-programmed as a 1650m race for the same class was already scheduled.

Tuesday's trials at Longford have also been transferred to Devonport due to the state of the Longford track.
