Pinjarra harness ‘hot laps’ to get exciting new twist
The Pinjarra Paceway has already been lit up by the fast-paced racing innovation known as “Lightning Laps”, but a new tweak to the starting set-up is set to add an intriguing new dimension.
While the races have seen eight starters all tear off the front line together since the Lightning Laps were ignited in 2023, RWWA Head of Harness Racing and Special Projects Cameron Brown said a new three-month trial with an extended number of starters would kick off next month.
The 10-horse fields will now have seven starters off the front line and three off the back in a move designed to spark more competition in the 1177m dashes and further promote WA harness racing as a wagering product. Ultimately, it is expected to elevate the Lightning Laps, which have already triggered strong wagering revenue, to a new level of excitement.
"The Lightning Laps have already been a successful innovation and have attracted huge support from WA trainers," Cameron said.
"The horses leave the gate fast and there is non-stop action throughout the races. We see excitement and tight finishes and we also see upsets.
"But we consistently review our racing with a focus on improving our product and we want to continue to innovate. In the current market, harness racing needs to be bold and that's what we plan to be."
Cameron said he would also consider taking the Lightning Laps to other WA harness racing venues on the back of the Pinjarra trial of the new starting set-up.
Pinjarra has already run 140 Lightning Lap races, which has opened up opportunity for a wide range of horses and attracted massive nominations for each event.
