Oaks path begins for Mating Call
Time away has made all the difference to Dan Clarken’s possible next stable star.
The filly might be paying a price for the company she kept last year but Mating Call has the potential to overcome it on her way to a possible Australasian Oaks berth.
Co-trainers Dan Clarken and Oopy Macgillivray could not be happier with their rising talent's progression since taking on stakes races in Melbourne, and her upcoming first-up run in the M&J Chickens Handicap (1300m) at Morphettville Parks on Saturday seemingly has the 60-kilos on her back being the only thing that could hold her back from impressing.
"She's had a jump out and two barrier trials because I wanted her fit and pretty well primed up to be very competitive first-up," Clarken said.
"The weight is a little bit of a worry but she certainly is a talent so she probably deserves to get het it.
Despite being winless in Melbourne, the daughter of Brazen Beau notched competitive figures on the Racing and Sports ratings scale of 105+ in her third placing when beaten by a half-length in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) won by subsequent Inglis Sprint (1200m) winner Getta Good Feeling.
She notched 103 in her fifth placing in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) when behind Ole Dancer who is a $7 chance for the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill also on Saturday.
"Since being in Melbourne she has definitely grown up," Clarken added.
"Her runs over there were terrific and she has matured up into a better type of horse and more tractable.
"She trialled in earmuffs once and then trialled at Oakbank the other day without them and she was good so in that respect she has matured.
"Over the spring she was a bit timid around other horses.
Clarken has laid out the Listed Clare Lindop Stakes (1600m) on March 28, then the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) as her following lead-up runs towards the $1 million Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville on April 25.
Mating Call is rated a $3.80 chance on Saturday with the Travis Doudle-trained gelding Sir Myka the $3.10 favourite.
"From the soft draw (barrier two), she should be able to perch herself up there and I think there is reasonable speed in the race so she should be able to find herself a nice spot there," Clarken said.
"It wouldn't surprise me if she just goes straight past them."
