Carl Spackler is the horse that lured James Mcdonald to Royal Ascot but he will not be his only ride at the famous carnival.

The Sydney-based New Zealander will be a regular in the Wathnan Racing colours after being snapped up to complement its big team.

McDonald will be in action on the first three days, including four engagements on Tuesday's opening day, with Wathnan thrilled to have been able to secure his services.

"James Doyle is our number one, William Buick will get plenty of rides and we'll give James McDonald some opportunities," Wathnan racing adviser Richard Brown said.

"We should have a good size team, with second choices with nice chances.

"It's hard to get the top guys as they've got commitments, but we reached out to James and he was happy to help."

The shortest-priced of McDonald's Day 1 runners for Wathnan is King's Gambit, who is a 10/1 chance in the Wolferton Stakes, which is the second-last race of the day.

McDonald will be aboard 12/1 chance Underwriter in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes, for which Wathnan also has the 4/1 favourite Postmodern, who will be ridden by Doyle.

McDonald will be a rival of Aussie hope Asfoora in the King Charles III Stakes (1006m), engaged to ride Wathnan's longshot Group 2-winning colt Aesterius.

Fields and declared riders for all races on the second and third days were not finalised by midday Monday, Australian time, but McDonald has already been declared as the rider for another roughie,Shine On Me, in the Queen Mary Stakes.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Carl Spackler is an 18/1 chance in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, which kicks off Tuesday's card, in what will be his first start for Maher and Yulong, which bought the son of Lope De Vega after his win Makers Mark Mile at Keeneland on April 11.

That was one of three Grade 1 wins for the entire who has won eight of his 12 starts.

Carl Spackler drew barrier eight in the 11-horse field for the straight-track event, which is headed by Rosallion and includes Golden Eagle winner Lake Forest and another horse with Aussie connections, the OTI-raced Docklands, the fifth placegetter from last year's Cox Plate.
