Kiwi filly out to Deal at Randwick

Roger James is no stranger to success in the Sunshine State and he and co-trainer Robert Wellwood believe their filly She's A Dealer can make her mark in Queensland in the Group 1 Oaks at Eagle Farm on June 7.

However before that, the three-year-old daughter of 2017 Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) winner Ace High will make her Australian debut at Randwick on Saturday in the Chalouhi Handicap (1800m) in a test not only of her measure against the locals but also her ability to handle what is expected to be the heaviest conditions she has faced in her short career so far.

"She's a filly that we've held in high regard all the way through and she has natural pace and speed which is nice to see," Wellwood said.

"When she was due to have her maiden start last year, she had an infection on the lung which stopped us for a considerable amount of time and that is why she is so lightly raced.

"Fortunately, she has got over that and has put two wins together impressively which gives us the confidence to give her a chance."

She's A Dealer has won her last two outings in New Zealand, both on surfaces rated Soft 6. Up to 75mm of rain is forecast to fall in Sydney in the lead-up with the track posted as Heavy 9 on Wednesday.

"It wasn't all that wet at those races and that is probably our main concern this weekend," Wellwood added.

"She has trialled on a Heavy 10 here but that was only a trial and she was probably (a level) above them in it that day.

"It is really an unknown to the most part but we are there and it is our only opportunity to get to Queensland so we have to run.

"Everything she did as a young horse, she did with ease and we are excited."

The filly's outing will also see UK-born and now New Zealand-based George Rooke have his first ride in Australia as James and Wellwood maintain the faith the winning combination.

Rooke began his career in England in 2018 before making the big move to New Zealand last October.

"He is a class jockey and he deserves his chance," Wellwood said.

Roger James took out the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) with Giovana in 2000.
