Jett still flying high
Victorian jockey Jett Stanley celebrated his first return to Tasmania since last month’s Launceston Cup, with a winning treble at the same venue on Friday night.
Stanley is riding high at the moment after winning the Group 2 Adelaide Cup following his Launceston Cup victory aboard Asva.
"I've been in form, so the confidence within myself is probably helping a lot too," Jett Stanley said.
Stanley rode a double for Cranbourne-based trainer Matthew Brown, securing victories with Veins Within Rock ($1.90) and Quafftide ($8). The maiden win of Veins Within Rock was remarkable, finishing with a winning margin of 9.75 lengths despite idling near the finish line.
"He really surprised me the way he just accelerated and gapped them at the top of the straight. I had one look, and I had to double-check how far I was in front. He just did it so effortlessly," said Stanley.
Matthew Brown has a close association with trainer Glenn Stevenson, often using that relationship to successfully place his horses in Tasmania.
"It's pretty full on at Cranbourne, and the horses can get over it a little bit. When they get to Tassie and work off the beach every day, it's just a whole new environment, and it can be really beneficial." Brown said.
Brown indicated that both winners may remain in the state for at least another run.
The third of Jett Stanley's winners came aboard the shortest-priced favourite of the night. Just Cruisin ($1.05) placed multiple times at Listed level during the Summer Racing Festival and was in a completely different grade to his opposition, effortlessly winning a Class 4 (1400m) by five lengths.
"He did that in second gear, so that was quite a good feeling," said Stanley, who has been aboard Just Cruisin' for five of his six runs for the preparation.
Trainer Kelvin Hamilton will now look for suitable races in Victoria for Just Cruisin', keen to find some weight relief after running in weight-for-age races for most of the summer.
Despite his winning treble, Stanley had to share riding honours with Tasmania's leading apprentice, Jabez Johnstone, who also rode three winners on the night. Johnstone landed two wins for his master, Sarah Cotton, with Dizz Boogie Time ($11) and Sevillana ($7.50), along with Zambezi Blonde ($1.65) for the John Keys stable.
