Iceman running hot
After making a comeback to race riding 20 months ago, Kelvin Sanderson feels like he’s back to his best, saying it took longer than he expected to get his ‘eye’ in.
Results would indicate Sanderson is right on track; he currently sits sixth on the jockeys premiership, having ridden 14 winners at the healthy strike rate of 13.60%."I'm really happy; at the start of this season, I set my sights on doubling what I rode last season, and I'm well on track to well and truly doubling those figures," Sanderson said.
Last season Sanderson finished with 23 winners at 9.70%.
"It actually took me a while to get my eye in. You think you are riding well, but I think the trainers are starting to see that I am riding well, and I'm happy the way I am riding, and I'm getting support from many of the better stables now."
Sanderson rode a double at the Launceston meeting on 13 November and hasn't been far away since; from his last nine rides, he has been runner-up five times.
In Launceston on Wednesday night, Sanderson has five rides, all look to have a winning chance, with his best hope being the up-and-coming sprinter Durazzo, who goes around in the 1100m BM76 Hcp after missing out on a start in last week's Listed Newmarket Hcp.
"He's a really nice horse; I think he was probably unlucky in the Goodwood probably drew an ordinary gate; barrier one didn't help him; he was always going to be in the barriers a long time and stepped a bit slow and ended up in a sticky spot.
"I think he has shown that he is going to measure up; he is going to be a nice horse, small fields I don't like them. Funny things can happen in small fields."
Already, two early scratches have reduced the race to just four starters.
Sanderson, dubbed the 'Iceman' early in his career by race caller Peter Gillis, also has a strong winning hope on Prophet Eyes in the 2100m BM60 Hcp; Sanderson has been aboard the 6YO for a win and a second at his past two starts.
"Trying him over the 2100m, they think there are a lot of races about; he gives me every indication he will get a bit further. We will just have to wait and see."
Sanderson's other rides at the meeting are Puzzle Miss in the 1200m Maiden, Ocean Eyes in the 1400m Maiden, and It's Jagger Time in the 1600m Maiden/Class 1.
My best bets are Don't Give Up in the fourth, it was a super run on debut and Goddess Of Rock in the fifth, back in class and it looks a great each-way bet.
Duncan Dornauf will be trackside for all the action on Taracing Live. The first timed to go at 18:05.
