Ice broken with Trinder treble
Devonport treble for Adam Trinder.
Local trainer Adam Trinder brought a large team of nine runners to Sunday's eight-race card in Devonport and left with a winning treble.
It was a return party for Trinder's former stable apprentice, Erica Byrne Burke, who rode two of Trinder's three winners, including Twice the Ice at her first ride since 21 February.
Maiden winner Twice the Ice (7) upset her more fancied stablemate Redair ($2.60 fav), but the result didn't come as a surprise to the winning trainer.
"She'd shown us a little bit at home, and we put her away last preparation to let her furnish herself as she was a bit immature. Six months off has done her the world of good and hopefully she goes on with it now as I expect that she would," said Adam Trinder.
The second half of Byrne Burke's double, and the last of Trinder's three winners was the most impressive of them all. Thoros Of Myr ($6.50) recorded a slick 1:08.03s winning a Class 2 over 1150m, running out an emphatic 5.5-length winner over Berserker ($6).
"He's been a frustrating horse. He's a horse that we had a very high opinion of during his two-year-old year, but he was probably a bit immature physically.
"We were content with what he did first-up, but he can just question things at times. It was able to work out perfectly for us, where he just thought he was having an exhibition gallop, and he was nice and strong, and hopefully he can get a bit of confidence out of that."
The first part of Sunday's Devonport card belonged to the Trinder family, with Adam also training Rubick's Affair to a narrow win in race 4 (0-60, 1350m). Additionally, Adam's father, Michael Trinder, landed a winner in the first leg of the quaddie with Chicane (BM68, 1350m).
Bookends for Barry
Hall of Fame trainer Barry Campbell unveiled a promising debutant to open Sunday's program with four-year-old gelding Simply Deep ($2.30) winning a maiden over 1009m.
On a day featuring several quick times, Simply Deep recorded 58.99s to narrowly upset race favourite Roundle Park ($1.70) in a race where the quinella appear to be horses to follow going forward.
Simply Deep was originally a $260,000 yearling purchase at the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
At the other end of the day, Shy Guy ($8) notched his second win in five Tasmanian starts with a narrow victory in a Class 2 (1650m).
Campbell's daughter, Jess, part-owns the four-year-old gelding, who has proven to be a shrewd purchase as a $13,000 Inglis Digital buy in November last year.
It was a local domination on Sunday's card, with all eight winners trained in the area.
Hayley faces some time off
Jockey Hayley McCarthy suffered a broken collarbone as a result of a fall as the barriers opened in the final race of the day.
It's rotten luck for the hard-working rider who fractured her wrist in a race fall in July last year, forcing a lengthy absence from the saddle.
