The Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained Chayan was drawn to start from 12 but moves into gate 10 after the emergencies come out of Saturday's big race at Rosehill Gardens.

"I'm happy with that barrier for Chayan, she should be able to find a good position with cover,'' Annabel Archibald said.

"But it is such an open race and it will come down to luck in running. Guest House has drawn well (barrier 10) and I think the Blue Diamond winner, Streisand, is the forgotten filly.''

Chayan remained at $5 and alone at the top of Golden Slipper betting after most of her main rivals drew wide barriers. The Slipper draw highlights included:

  • Hidrix drew the coveted rails barrier, the most successful starting position in Golden Slipper history with 11 wins.
  • The barrier draw wasn't kind to trainer Bjorn Baker with his top colts Warwoven and Paradoxium given gates 14 and 18 respectively.
  • Melbourne colt Stretan Ruler was drawn to start out of the hoodoo barrier 13 which has never produced a Slipper winner.
  • Flying filly Pembrey drew barrier 19 and will start from the extreme outside barrier of 16 unless first emergency Agrarian Girl (barrier 20) gains a start.
TAB Fixed Odds spokesman Tim Ryan said the barrier draw forced him to revise Golden Slipper betting.

"I've left Chayan unchanged at $5 but now she is at the top of betting on her own after Paradoxium drew 18,'' Ryan said.

"Paradoxium was $5 before the draw but he's out to the second line of betting at $7 with his stablemate Warwoven (barrier 14).

"The top six chances all drew double figure barriers with the horse that fared the best of those, Guest House getting gate 10 but he is most likely to jump from 8. He has firmed from $11 to $9.''

Hidrix, one of three starters for the trainer Chris Waller stable, has drawn barrier 1 which has produced 11 Golden Slipper winners, most recently with Shinzo (2023) and Fireburn (2022).

But drawing wide is not necessarily the end of a horse's winning chances as the 14 gate has produced six Golden Slipper winners including Estijaab (2018) and Kiamichi (2019).

In fact, barrier 14 is the equal second most successful Slipper starting gate along with barriers 3 and 8.

Another of the Waller stable runners, Campione D'Italia has barrier 14 while fourth emergency Screen Icon was given barrier 3 and Black Opal winner Music Time drawn to start from eight.

A closer examination of the previous 69 runnings of the Golden Slipper reveals that 52 winners have started between barriers 1 and 10.

Thus, 17 winners have started from barrier 11 or wide including two from the extreme outside gate of 16 – Phelan Ready (2009) and Vancouver (2015) – which is likely to be Pembrey's starting position.

But supporters of Stretan Ruler will be waiting for the Saturday 7.30am scratching deadline to determine their colt's starting position as he currently has barrier 13, the only barrier has not produced a Golden Slipper winner since the race was first run in 1957.
