Foursome full of Gold
Apprentice jockey Lauryn Bingley dominated Sunday's thoroughbred meeting in Devonport, riding half of the eight winners, including the feature of the day, the $50,000 Ladbrokes Golden Mile.
After winning the 2024 Golden Mile aboard General Assembly, Bingley partnered the Glenn Hodges-trained Sushi Express ($6-$3.10) to victory in 2025. Her haul of four winners on the day is a career best."He was too good for them; he deserved to win a nice race this horse," said Bingley after her Golden Mile win.
From a wide barrier, the well-supported Sushi Express went straight to the front and was expertly rated by Bingley, though she was forced to hold off a late challenge from Moveforlex ($10), who loomed as the winner 200m from home.
Sushi Express finished third in the 2025 Devonport Cup, trailing behind Ashy Boy and Kaliuwaa Falls, who were both in Sunday's field. Trainer Glenn Hodges said that the 2026 Cup has now become the goal for the eight-year-old, who is the only horse he has in his stable.
"I aimed him at this race and now we've got the job done, he'll head straight to the paddock and come back for the Cup in January," Hodges said.
Bingley's other three winners all came for her master Barry Campbell, including a double inside the first three races.
Dynamic Deel ($5.50) won the opening event on the program, and Night Invader ($13) was particularly impressive, storming home late to win a class 1 over 1009m.
The Bingley/Campbell combination rounded out the day with Tuskegee ($3.40) emphatically winning a BM62 (1650m).
"She's a great girl, Lauryn, she's gone to a new level, and she just tries so hard," Barry Campbell said after the final race of the day.
"More importantly, she's a good person and she does her best, so it's great to see her getting the reward."
It was a dominant performance by apprentice riders in Devonport, winning seven of the eight races overall. Jackson Radley (Vino Novello), Jabez Johnstone (Whippin' Piccadilly), and Christopher Pang (Thoros of Myr) also secured apprentice wins. The only senior jockey to score a victory was David Pires aboard Munich Marble, which was a replacement ride for Lauryn Bingley, who was dual engaged in the race.
