Final Orders oh so good for Cromwell and Donoghue

“Keith is unbelievable round here”

Gavin Cromwell and Keith Donoghue have become something of a potent combination in Cheltenham cross-country races and the duo were one the board once again thanks to a faultless performance from Final Orders.

The trainer and jockey partnership struck with Stumptown to land the prize twelve months ago, but with the eight-year-old still recovering from his exertions of winning the famous Velka Pardubicka, it was over to Final Orders to step in as super-sub.

Despite being sent off a relatively unfancied 16/1 chance, success never really looked in doubt for Final Orders as a uber-confident Donoghue expertly steered his mount round Cheltenham's unique cross-country course on the front end before setting him alight up the hill to score by four-and-a-quarter lengths.

The gamble of the race J'arrive De L'est, who was as big as 25/1 in the week and sent off the 7/4 market leader on his first start for Emmet Mullins, was always close enough if good enough but couldn't match the finishing kick of Final Orders late on.

Keith Donoghue, who enjoyed a famous association with the great Tiger Roll over the cross-country fences, said: "It's good ground and I knew we'd stay well. He was enjoying it and taking me along. I think he is better when he is travelling and enjoying it.

"He was jumping brilliant and he stayed well. That's seven wins over the course (for the jockey) now, including five at The Festival.

"He is a great jumper. He's by Camelot and has got small feet on him. He's not that big but he jumps good."

Gavin Cromwell was also quick to praise his rider and added: "Keith is unbelievable around here and am sure he's worth at least a stone on any horse. He loves it so much and gets a tune out of the horses, he gives them confidence and they jump brilliantly for him.

"The horse just really enjoyed it – he is so nimble and quick and really took to it today.

"We will now look at the Cross Country race at The Festival."
