Doudle believes in his talented stayer

Travis Doudle hasn’t ruled out a tilt at the Listed Sandown Cup on Sunday week if talented staying mare Sentimental Flame can find winning form at Morphettville on Saturday.

Sentimental Flame's barrier manners have been a source of constant frustration.

She missed the start in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup before finishing seventh behind Silent Surrente and was again slow out last start in he Port Adelaide Cup behind Sir Kingsford, the second horse Basilinna franking the form with her win in the Listed Andrew Ramsden at Flemington last weekend securing her place in the 2025 Melbourne Cup field.

"When you look at her last five runs, she's been beaten in a good race at Flemington and has run in four stakes races since, her worst result beaten five lengths in an Adelaide Cup,'' Travis Doudle said.

"We've got a horse racing very well but just not getting the job done.

"If she happens to run well the Sandown Cup is an option eight days later.

"If not, we'll try and pick some low hanging fruit here and then set her for the Adelaide Cup next year,'' he said.

Doudle has booked dual Group 1 winning jockey Lachlan Neindorf, added the visors on Saturday and said the mare had worked impressively leading in.

"We've got a very in-form rider and made a gear change,'' Doudle added.

"She galloped extremely well here Tuesday.

"If she can jump and put herself in the first three and not over race, I think she'll be right in the mix,'' he said.

The talented galloper has just two wins from her 21 starts but has been placed in Listed company, running third in the 2023 Hill Smith Stakes behind Air Assault and finished fourth in last year's Group 3 SA Fillies Classic over 2500m at Morphettville.

Doudle said another frustrating thing was the fact when they work on her in the barriers, she doesn't put a foot wrong.

"She's pretty good in practice,'' Doudle said.

"She's like a full forward who kicks 85 out of 100 in the warm up and then come game time can't kick straight,'' he said.
