Happy Valley Preview - 14th January 2026
Brett Davis provides exclusive Preview of Happy Valley races.
Rail - B Course
Race 1
#10 LUCKY GENERATIONS delivered his first and only win on International Jockeys' Championship night courtesy of a peach from Joao Moreira. The low draw also played its part in the victory before the horrid draw and change of venue to Sha Tin brought about a disappointing result at his most recent attempt. Now back to Happy Valley, from a similar draw, with Hugh Bowman jumping atop there's no reason why he cant go close to winning a second.
#4 HAPPY BOYS often finds himself in tight situations and limited space when looking to make his finishing run because he doesn't possesses the natural gate speed to position up.That'll be the worrying factor again over the Happy Valley 1200m, although the wider draw can help to alleviate some of that pain. Zac Purton jumps aboard for a second consecutive ride and he would've learnt plenty about his strengths and weaknesses from the first attempt.
#5 PODIUM has been in solid form this campaign under the care of David Eustace and remains in the hunt for another win.Everything fell into place on the 19th November when he secured the win over this course and trip whilst performances either side of that effort have rated high. What he'll require to win with the 130lbs is good heady ride from regular jockey Jerry Chau and that begins with an aggressive jump out the gates.
#1 NABRASKAN pulled up with blood in the trachea following his third place in class 4 two runs back but scoped clean following his first run in class 5 last outing.A tongue was also added on that occasion when he lead everywhere bar the post and the low draw gave him access to the lead. The wide draw and noted oppositional speed drawn underneath should be acknowledged here because it wont be as easy work trying to find the rail.
#8 ORIENTAL SURPRISE draws the plum alley for the second time in his career so he can't be completely overlooked, despite the fact he remains a maiden from 17 starts. He's done a good job on two occasions over the 1000m to get through and finish second/third, and if you go right back, he finished 3rd over this course and trip in season 23/24.Plenty of the top jockeys have had a crack without success but the low draw creates chance.

THE JANUARY CUP
(Gp3 - 1800m - Hcp)
#7 ENCOUNTERED has been competitive in this Gp3 event on more than one occasion over the years and found a new lease of life during the off season break via a stable change.New trainer Brett Crawford has him racing at an excellent level this campaign which was highlighted last November by a win in the Gp3 Sa Sa Ladies Purse.A trial at Conghua in late December was great work in preparation for this contest tonight, with the draw, jockey booking and current rating pointing in the direction of a win.
#6 HONG LOK GOLF was an outstanding individual last season winning six of his seven career starts. He'd been unable to keep that winning sequence aloft earlier this campaign until he most recently produced another classy and gritty performance to claim another prize. He's a big bulky individual that's now race hard fit and for that reason alone he won't be easily shrugged.
#8 SPEED DRAGON ripped out high quality figures when winning a class 2 over this course and trip in earlier October 2025 before two competitive efforts followed in November/December.A freshen up over the Christmas period at Conghua has since been enjoyed with his final gallop, back at Sha Tin, and under Lyle Hewitson, brisk and fluent.A strong tempo throughout is the key to his chance and I'm banking on that being the case.
#12 WINNING WING did an amazing job to finish 2nd at Sha Tin last start after being completely detached from the field at one point. He won't be able to giveaway that amount of ground here at Happy Valley now he's rising a decent notch in grade because he's along way out of the handicap at the weights.Nevertheless, he's progressed very quickly in the last 6 weeks now he's racing over further so be respectful of his rapid rise.
#4 HELENE FEELING won the 2025 edition of the Gp3 January Cup off a rating of 92 points after settling worse than mid-field through the early part. With his current rating now 98, the outside gate to exit from becomes a serious challenge in more ways than one.Conversely, he's a well rounded competitor who possess tactical versatility, and I'm predicting connections roll the dice and go forward.
Selections : 7,6,8,12,4
