Byrne Burke back in the saddle

Irish-born jockey Erica Byrne Burke returns to race riding in Devonport on Sunday, after a near three-month absence.

The popular jockey hasn't ridden since Launceston Cup Day in late February due to complications with her visa following the conclusion of her apprenticeship.

"I was on a bridging visa, and the conditions were that I could only work when training. So, when I came out of my apprenticeship, the conditions changed, which is something I initially didn't realise," Byrne Burke said.

The unfortunate break, which also meant Byrne Burke was unable to ride trackwork, has her hungry for a return to the saddle.

"It was a long break that wasn't wanted, and I'm really excited to get back into it."

After riding her first winner in May 2021, Byrne Burke concluded her apprenticeship at the end of February with 152 wins to her credit, boasting an impressive 14% winning strike rate.

71 of those wins came for her apprentice master Adam Trinder, and that partnership will continue despite Byrne Burke's transition into the senior ranks.

"I'll continue to work for Adam (Trinder), but as a senior, I'll be looking for opportunities with other stables as they present, which is something I'm also excited about."

Byrne Burke has ridden in the past two sets of Tasmanian trials in readiness for her race return and has a solid book of four rides on Sunday.

Byrne Burke will be in the saddle of Twice The Ice (race 2), Thoros Of Myr (race 6), and Pasheona (race 7) for her former master Adam Trinder, and will also partner Gee Gee Can Win (race 5) for local trainer Trent Wells.

"They're all pretty even chances, but I feel like working Pasheona at home, she's well above herself, but it is quite a hard race, and she has drawn a little tricky (barrier 7).

Byrne Burke was Tasmania's leading apprentice last season and looks well-placed to be a positive addition to the state's senior riding ranks.

"It's a good time to come back with winter being a bit quiet. I'll get back into the swing of things and hopefully have a really good Summer Carnival."
