BYD Powers Up WA’s Richest Raceday as Headline Partner of The BYD Quokka
Perth Racing is proud to announce world leading new-energy automotive brand BYD as headline partner of The $5 million Quokka, Western Australia’s richest ever raceday, to be held at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, 18 April 2026.
Named in honour of the 'happiest animal on earth' — the short-tailed scrub wallaby native to Western Australia's south-west — The Quokka has rapidly cemented itself as one of Australia's most exciting slot races. With a $5 million prize purse, it ranks as equal fifth richest race in the nation.
A Race That Captured the Nation
First staged at Ascot in April 2023, The Quokka immediately captured the imagination of the racing public, drawing fierce interstate competition as east coast contenders travelled west to chase the lucrative prize pool.
Now in its fourth year, The BYD Quokka continues its upward trajectory, following in the footsteps of other slot race successes such as the $20m TAB Everest, staged by the Australian Turf Club.
A Powerful Western Australian Alignment
BYD — with the recognisable tagline Build Your Dreams — becomes headline partner of the event, which is also supported by Tourism WA aligning with the State's Walking On A Dream campaign and reinforcing The BYD Quokka's position as a marquee sporting and cultural moment on WA's calendar.
BYD Australia Regional Sales Manager WA/SA Jaimie Basell said:
"With a growing footprint across the Australian sporting landscape, BYD continues to expand its community presence through partnerships with leading sporting codes worldwide".
Perfect Timing for WA Momentum
The partnership comes at a pivotal time for BYD in Western Australia, with vehicle sales accelerating since the arrival of BYD's award winning, plug-in hybrid dual-cab ute, the Shark 6.
In a uniquely Western Australian spectacle befitting the State's richest raceday, competing jockeys of the main race will make their entrance down the Ascot straight aboard BYD Shark utes — delivering theatre, innovation and unmistakable WA flair.
Understanding the Slot Race Format
The 1200m sprint features 13 starters, each selected by slot holders who invest $200,000 to secure a starting position. Slot owners may nominate their own horse or negotiate with connections of another runner to share in prize money — a format that has revolutionised racing and heightened competition across Australia.
Perth Racing CEO James Oldring said the partnership signalled an exciting new chapter for the event.
"We are delighted to welcome BYD as headline partner of The Quokka. An event of this scale provides a powerful platform to showcase world-class racing at Ascot during the Autumn Carnival, while appealing to experience-driven audiences in a vibrant carnival atmosphere."
"We look forward to showcasing BYD's class-leading vehicle range on course as part of our premium offering, as we buckle up for a journey that will take The Quokka from strength to strength."
