Brisbane stakes sojourn for Flying Embers
A Group 3 race for three-year-olds in Brisbane looms for progressive filly Flying Embers
Flying Embers has been working her way through the grades in NSW and is set to get her first opportunity to step up to stakes level with a trip to Brisbane in the plans for the progressive filly next weekend.
Sydney trainer John Thompson said three-year-old Flying Embers was scheduled to contest the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) against her own age at Eagle Farm at her next start, having won four of her past five starts in NSW.
The daughter of Shalaa notched her first city victory last start at Randwick when scoring by just over a length in the Midway Handicap benchmark-72 race over 1400m on May 24 on a heavy track, after winning another Midway at Kembla Grange over the same distance the start before that.f
"She's a nice filly," Thompson said.
"She beat the older horses there the other day at Randwick and she was three-deep with no cover, so dropping back to her own age helps.
"I'm not sure about her over the mile. She's never been over that distance but she's been strong in her last two 1400m wins.
"She's honest. She tries and she's just a quality filly."
The Gunsynd Classic is on the undercard to the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap program at Eagle Farm on Saturday and Thompson believes the filly has earned her chance to chase some black-type.
He said Flying Embers had come through her Randwick win in "super" fashion.
He indicated the Gunsynd Classic would likely be the filly's final appearance of her three-year-old season, having raced four times for three wins and a second so far this preparation.
"I reckon that will be her last run for the preparation," Thompson said.
"We'll put her away after that for the spring."
