Brilliant Briasa on target for The Galaxy with easy Rosehill trial win

The "Grey Flash" Briasa produced another brilliant display of sustained speed to win a barrier trial impressively at Rosehill on Tuesday.

Briasa led throughout under regular jockey Tyler Schiller and accelerated clear in the run home to win the 900m trial by six lengths from Reserve Bank in a fast 54.4s (last 600m in 34.42s).

Trained by Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes, Briasa has now won successive barrier trials very easily and is on target to resume in the Group 1 $1 million The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 21.

Briasa will then go second-up into the Group 1 $3 million TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on Day One of The Championships, April 4.

This is the same race program Team Hawkes set for Briasa last year when the grey sprinter ran an unlucky fourth in The Galaxy before a career-best effort to beat Overpass in the TJ Smith Stakes.

Overpass, trained by Bjorn Baker, is going to the TJ Smith Stakes first-up and showed his usual speed to win his 900m heat in 55.29s.

Jockey Josh Parr did urge $12.4 million earner Overpass to the line to win his trial by nearly a length from Catch The Glory and Terrestar.

The trials session also featured some leading $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes contenders including Skyline Stakes winner Campione D'Italia who contested a 900m heat.

Melbourne jockey Damian Lane made the trip to Sydney to ride Campione D'Italia and the colt was ridden very conservatively early before stretching out generously without being pressured to finish fourth behind Moscow Maid.
The Chris Waller-trained Campione D'Italia is among nominations for the Group 3 $250,000 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

However, Campione D'Italia is assured of a start in the Golden Slipper and is expected to go straight into the world's richest juvenile race without another race.

Blue Diamond runner-up Closer To Free jumped straight to the front early and was never headed to win his 1030m trial impressively.

The Danny O'Brien-trained Closer To Free defeated Fireball by one-and a half length with nearly six lengths to Grafology.

Closer To Free is not nominated for the Golden Slipper but O'Brien has indicated connections will pay the $150,000 late entry fee to secure a start.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Shiki, winner of the Gimcrack Stakes earlier in the season, was deliberately ridden just in behind the speed in her 900m before she switched to the centre of the course and closed off nicely for second behind Vatican.

Shiki has already earned more than $240,000 prizemoney and is assured of her place among the 16 starters in the Golden Slipper next week.

#Eternal Warrior was entered for the Rosehill trials but was withdrawn after the colt was found to have "significant changes to his suspensory branch" ending his Golden Slipper preparation.
