If last year's edition is anything to go by, Saturday's feature at Newcastle, the Group 2 The Hunter (1300m) is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

Now in its seventh year, the race was won by subsequent Group 1 winner Briasa last year, and while trainer Bjorn Baker may not have one of that level, he believes Iowna Merc and Robusto can acquit themselves well.

Iowna Merc has had a fruitful 2025, winning three races, one at Group 2 level, while also placing in the Expressway Stakes and more recently, the Group 3 Sydney Stakes (1200m) behind Rothfire.

It was that effort that encouraged Baker to tackle the likes of Jimmysstar, Lady Shenandoah and Briasa in the Russel Balding Stakes (1300m) last start, ultimately finishing a well beaten 15th of 15.

"Iowna Merc never fired on the track last time but he's in good order," Baker said.

"He just didn't go at all, he didn't fire, so I think we just press on."

Robusto also runs in the Darby Racing colours with the chief stable supporter purchasing the gelding in September 2024 for $160,000.

Formerly trained by Chris Waller, Robusto has won over $1.5 million for the Baker stable, the bulk of which came courtesy of winning the Group 2 The Ingham (1600m), a race which he'll be set for again.

"Robusto's definitely well, he's going to be first up and try and aim towards The Ingham," Baker said.

"He's not out of it because he's got some good form, although I think he probably takes a run or two to get to his best."

With official handicap ratings of 108, Iowna Merc and Robusto will share topweight honours with 59kg under quality conditions, rated $15 and $13 respectively in early betting.
