Before The First - Tracks, Facts & Tips for your punting day
The scramble for a start in the Golden Slipper goes down to the wire at Rosehill Gardens today.
The final two Slipper lead-ups, the Magic Night Stakes and Pago Pago Stakes, will determine the elite 16-horse field for the $5 million Golden Slipper next week.
Warwoven , the long-time Golden Slipper favourite, lost his place at the top of Slipper betting this week and is at $2.80 for the Pago Pago behind Central Europe at $2.10.
A top two finish should be enough for Warwoven to get into the Golden Slipper but boom colt Central Europe is in a must-win situation.
It's a similar situation for the fillies in the Magic Night Stakes where Queensland's Pembrey is the $1.95 favourite.
At Caulfield, the $1 million The Showdown provides an opportunity for the likes of Sydney filly Miss Chanel to vault into the Golden Slipper field although it would be tough for a two-year-old to back-up in seven days with an interstate trip in between.
The feature race at Rosehill is the Group 1 $1 million Coolmore Classic (1500m) for the fillies and mares where Lazzura is early favourite at $5 along with Savvy Hallie.
Lazzura, who has the all-conquering trainer-jockey combination of Chris Waller and James McDonald on her side, has topweight of 58kg – a handicap no mare has carried to Coolmore success since the great Sunline won with 60kg in 2002.
Savvy Hallie has drawn awkwardly in gate 13 but she has tactical speed and her form this autumn has been excellent, winning the Light Fingers Stakes then stretching the outstanding filly Tempted in the Surround Stakes.
McDonald, Sydney's reigning premier rider, comes off a record six winners at Randwick last week and has nine rides at Rosehill of which seven are favourite – Jamabalaya (race 1), Pembrey (race 3), Central Europe (race 4), Wootton Verni (race 5), Sixties (race 6), Lazzura (race 8) and Militarize (race 9).
His other rides Tazima (race 2) and Captain Furai (race 10) are on the second line of betting.

BEST BET: Unleeshing (r2 no3) was impressive in successive wins by comfortable margins at Kensington and Randwick then had a month between runs and was given her opportunity at stakes level when fifth to Pinito at Randwick last week. She's on the quick back-up and in a much easier race. Clearly the one to beat.
THE NEXT BEST: Sixties (r7 no1) is short enough in betting around $1.60 but it is an understandable quote given his outstanding form this campaign which includes his Hayes Stakes win at Group 3 level before a fighting effort when third to Observer in the Group 1 Australian Guineas. Sixties looks well placed in the Phar Lap Stakes and has James McDonald to overcome his awkward barrier.
VALUE BET: Shohisha (r8 no12) was first-up in the Guy Walter Stakes when fourth to Verona Rose, beaten less than two lengths, after having to make her finishing run on inferior ground close to the inside rail. Shohisha drops to 51kg and meets most of her Coolmore Classic rivals considerably better at the weights. She has been backed from $26 into $19 and is still very good each way value.
THE WHISPER: Pembrey (r3 no3), a dominant winner on debut at Eagle Farm, was backed as if unbeatable in the Sweet Embrace Stakes but raced without much luck when fifth to Spicy Miss. There were plenty of excuses for Pembrey last start and significantly McDonald has stayed with the Queensland filly. She's definitely worth another chance.
CAULFIELD
BEST BET: Salty Pearl (r9 no12) has been placed in all three starts this campaign including her second to super filly Sheza Alibi in the Armanasco Stakes before her third in Sass Appeal's Kewney Stakes. Her form reads very well for the Platinum Guineas which does look an easier race. Drawn to get the perfect run and she is a Group 2 winner at 1600m.
NEXT BEST: Buckaroo (r8 no2) was placed in four successive Group 1 weight-for-age races including his narrow loss to champion mare Via Sistina in the Cox Plate before failing in the Melbourne Cup. He resumed in the Futurity Stakes over 1400m and ran a blinder for second to Pericles. He's a Group 1 winner over the Caulfield 1800m and the small field suits.
VALUE BET: Furious (r1 no6) won over 2000m at Randwick three starts back and has been switched to Melbourne where he has raced well previously and is a Caulfield 1600m winner. Team Hawkes have found a very winnable race for Furious in the Caulfield opener and he's at generous odds around $7.
THE WHISPER: Ndola (r10 no4) was in career-best form over summer with three wins from seven starts and only missing a top three placing once. He had a month between runs before scoring a good win over the Flemington 1200m course. Ndola gets into the Caulfield closer with only 54.5kg and gets 6.5kg off Group 1 winner Jigsaw. Ndola can win again.
