Before The First
Champion jockey James McDonald can move closer to Hall of Famer Damien Oliver’s all-time Group 1 record when he rides Autumn Boy and Joliestar at Royal Randwick today.
It is only a matter of time before McDonald becomes the most successful Group 1 rider in Australian racing history and he has two outstanding chances at the Randwick meeting.
Autumn Boy continues to ease in betting and is out to $2.90 for the Group 1 $1 million Randwick Guineas (1600m) behind firming $2.30 favourite Sheza Alibi.
But Autumn Boy did enough when resuming with his closing third to Ninja in the Hobartville Stakes to indicate is in for a good autumn carnival program.
The Chris Waller-trained Autumn Boy won the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas last spring and he will enjoy stepping up to the Randwick 1600m course today.
Joliestar was typically brilliant first-up in the Expressway Stakes and she is a solid $2.40 favourite for the Group 1 $750,000 Canterbury Stakes (1300m).
The outstanding mare, a stablemate of Autumn Boy, races well at Randwick, is a winner over the 1300m course, and she has a powerful finishing burst.
At Flemington, Godolphin's crack colt Tentyris is also chasing a piece of racing history in the Group 1 $2 million Newmarket Handicap (1200m).
Tentyris has been burdened with 57kg and if successful in the Newmarket, he will equal a weight-carrying record for a three-year-old set by the great Ajax in 1938.
Godolphin's "Blue Army" is on the march this autumn and can continue their big-race winning momentum with Tom Kitten a very real chance to defend his title in the Group 1 $2 million All-Star Mile (1600m), and their promising two-year-old Zambales is ready to win the Group 2 $300,000 VRC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).
The All-Star Mile lost two of its main chances with scratchings of Buckaroo, who was withdrawn on veterinary advice this morning, and Treasurethe Moment.

ROYAL RANDWICK
THE NEXT BEST: Beadman (r5 no2) is a very gifted colt resuming after two impressive barrier trial efforts. Although he hasn't won first-up previously, he looks to be trained up for his return. Beadman is being aimed at the Group 1 The Galaxy against older sprinters in two weeks and if he is to be competitive in that race, he needs to be beating his own age here. Drawn to get the run of the race and looks very hard to beat.
VALUE BET: Naadra (r3 no2) is a well-bred filly by Tassort out of Najmah who ran very well on debut, stretching Wolf Gap at Warwick Farm. The Michael Freedman-trained Naadra finds herself back to fillies grade for the Reisling, perfectly drawn to settle on speed with the run of the race. She will get her chance and is worth a gamble around the $5 mark.
THE WHISPER: Gangsta Granny (r10 no6) is a talented mare who is yet to miss a top three finish in nine starts, winning four. She ran super mare Autumn Glow to a half length in the Toy Show Quality when resuming last spring then trained on to win The Nivision and finish third in The Invitation. She's resuming off two good trial efforts and although drawn a little awkwardly, she has James McDonald to find the way home.
FLEMINGTON
NEXT BEST: Tentyris (r9 no2) is a dynamic young sprinter going into the Newmarket Handicap off successive Flemington straight track Group 1 wins in the Coolmore Stud Stakes and Lightning Stakes. He has his share of weight with 57kg but is in such outstanding form and is blessed with stunning finishing speed.
VALUE BET: Burma Star (r1 no2) has always shown ability and broke through at stakes level over 1400m here during Cup Week last spring. He's resuming today off a couple of smart Flemington jump-outs and he brings the famous Winx combination of trainer Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman together again. Burma Star is good value near $7 in the Flemington opener.
THE WHISPER: Zambales (r6 no1) is a giant of a two-year-old and he's also big on ability. He was runner-up at his first two starts then closed off his race strongly when fourth in the Blue Diamond. Zambales will appreciate the big Flemington track and getting out to 1400m. He's short enough in betting but should win.
