A couple of upsets in Japan
Saturday's Kyoto and Sunday's Tokyo top races both went to "roughies".
Saturday was the Kyoto Shumbun Hai over 2200m G2 for 3yos and the shock winner was Shohei, a son of Saturnalia, ridden by Kawada, who went off at 10.7. Second home was M's and the third home was a Frankel product Del Avar on 14.4 with favourite Toppi Boom fourth.
At Tokyo the G1 NHK Mile Cup is a top race for the 3yos who aren't looking to head to the classics. This year's version went to Panja Tower on 26.1, by Tower of London, who put in a great finishing run to take the race from Magic Sands by a head, and a further "roughie" in third, Cerbiallo, on 73.7 – he's by Lord Kanaloa.
With 3yos there can be a lot of unexpected results as the horses may have come on over the winter break and surprise us all.
