A Closer Look – C F Orr Stakes
A look at the history of Saturday’s Group 1, which has had a change in timeslot.
There hasn't been a Group 1 this spring with less historical relevance than the $1 million C F Orr Stakes, which will be run at Caulfield this Saturday.
The 1400-metre weight-for-age contest this year celebrated its 100th anniversary, but has taken up a new timeslot.
The Melbourne Racing Club surrendered the Orr Stakes' position as Australian racing's first Group 1 of the year, on the first Saturday in February, for the position as Melbourne's final Group 1 of the Spring Carnival.
The move already looks a winner with star 1400m horses Jimmysstar and Angel Capital headlining this year's field.
Jimmysstar is coming off a win in the $3 million Russell Balding Stakes (1300m), when he ran a new career peak of 124 on theTimeform
scale. If he repeats that, and wins, on Saturday he'll be the equal fourth highest-rated winner of the Orr Stakes since Timeform ratings became attached to the race in 1992.
Another Wil ran 124 when he ran down 2023 Mr Brightside to win the first Orr Stakes run this year, back in February.
Black Caviar stands alone as the best Orr Stakes winner at 132, while Redoute's Choice and Black Heart Bart, who both ran 126, are the only others to have run better than 124.
The weight-for-age race's new home has it well-positioned as an option for in-form horses out of either the Sydney or Melbourne carnivals.
It is also an attractive back-end option for three-year-olds and features a colt who was one of the highest-profile of that age group coming into spring.
Vinrock will look to join the likes of Redoute's Choice and All Too Hard as three-year-old winners of the race that for a long time was a great race for that age group.
Redoute's Choice's win came in a patch that saw three-year-olds win every edition between 1998 and 2003 but All Too Hard, Alabama Express and Jacquinot the only ones since.
What Vinrock does have over the other three-year-olds to have gone around in the Orr Stakes is a weight edge with the race's move forward almost three months meaning Vinrock will carry just 53kg opposed to 55.5kg that the past three three-year-old winners carried in February.
