Ka Ying Rising was a World Pool wonder

Ka Ying Rising, Hong Kong’s superstar sprinter, helped spur The Everest betting turnover to a new World Pool single-race turnover record last year.

Hong Kong Jockey Club's chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges was addressing the Asian Racing Conference in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday when he revealed the 2025 The Everest generated World Pool betting of $HK83 million which is the most bet on a single race since the World Pool was introduced in 2018.

Engelbrecht-Bresges said with The Everest having the world's best sprinter, Ka Ying Rising in the elite 12-horse field, it stimulated betting and attracted global attention on the rich Randwick race.

"The best horses must compete against each other more often in the best races,'' Engelbrecht-Bresges said.

The World Pool continues to gain acceptance and punter interest globally that helps the racing industry combat the illegal betting market and is providing a financial boost to those host tracs by returning simulcasting income.

"The concept of having the best races in the world, and combining these events with wagering in one overall liquidity pool has been a great success,'' Engelbrecht-Bresges said.

Since the World Pool started in 2018/19 with Royal Ascot, it has now expanded to 380 events covering 54% of the best races in the world with an expected turnover of $HK12 billion in the 2025/26 season.

The first World Pool race in Australia this year is run at Flemington on Saturday with the Group 1 $1 million Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) that features a clash between Godolphin's crack three-year-old colts Beiwacht and Tentyris, and 2022 The Everest winner Giga Kick.
