Sir Gino fighting new infection

“We’re going into a different battlefield at the moment”

Nicky Henderson has revealed that Sir Gino will have to battle another infection alongside the fracture pelvis that he sustained at Cheltenham on trials day.

It was twelve months ago that Sir Gino was ruled out of the Game Spirit Chase with a knock to the leg that later spread into an infection, and once again, Henderson's star performer will have to recover from similar circumstances after being diagnosed with a similar issue.

"The injury is actually a fractured pelvis," said Henderson. "I have to say that is not the issue at the moment, but he is under pretty intense scrutiny at the moment because of the problem we had last year, which is an infectious sort of internally.

"We're going into a different battlefield at the moment. We've just got to keep on top of everything and life is never easy.

"He doesn't get much luck and if ever a horse deserved it, it is him. He's so good it's ridiculous – you have the best horse in the world but can't do anything with him.

"He's still in Gloucestershire and we're trying to get him home, but our vets and their vets are working together. He can only come home when they are happy and it's time.

"We're hoping as soon as we can, we get him back to his own hospital where he spent the six weeks last year and he will be much happier there."
