Paul Cole calls time on training career
Paul Cole, who currently trains on a joint license with his son Oliver, has called time on his training career.
Trainer of more than 1,500 winners in Britain across a lengthy career, Paul Cole enjoyed his finest day in the sun when saddling Generous to victory in the 1991 Epsom Derby. Generous went on to complete a memorable English-Irish Derby double when running out a ready winner over Prix du Jockey Club scorer Suave Dancer at the Curragh, before following up with a facile seven-length victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.Prior to Generous, who also claimed the Dewhurst Stakes as a two-year-old, Cole enjoyed Classic success with Irish Oaks heroine Knight's Baroness and St Leger Stakes winner Snurge. The pair both landed their respective Classic's in the year of 1990, while Snurge went on to claim the Group 1 Gran Premio Di Milano in Italy the following season.
Cole, who has been training Whatcombe since 1987 and was crowned British champion flat trainer in 1991, revealed to The Sun that he would step down from the training ranks, with son Oliver, who has been on the license since 2020, in line to solely take over the training operation.
"I looked out at a horse this morning and just thought the time has come for me to retire," Cole told The Sun.
"I've been sharing the licence with my son Oliver since 2020, and I'm just very old now.
"Oliver knows what he's doing and is more than capable."
Cole, who was at one-point in his career known as "King" of the two-year-olds, saddled Mr Dinos to a remarkable six-length victory over Persian Punch in the 2001 Ascot Gold Cup, while Highland Chief's heroics in the 2020 Golden Gates Stakes ensured Paul and Oliver would become the first trainers on a joint-license to taste success at the Royal meeting.
Carrying the same colours of renowned owner-breeder Mrs Fitri Hay, whom the Cole family have built up a longstanding relationship with over the years, Royal Scotsman provided the father and son duo with a final Group-race success when claiming the Diomed Stakes on Epsom Derby day twelve months ago.
