King’s best bets - 5th March 2026

Sam King is back with two selections on Thursday.

The best wager of the day comes in the CopyBet Daily Profit Boost Novices' Handicap Hurdle (4.25) at Haydock, where the 7/2 on offer about Land Of Punt is surely too big.

He comes out well on Racing Post Ratings here and arrives on the back of a highly-promising third-place finish in a two-mile novice event at Plumpton most recently. The form of that contest has worked out nicely with the winner Eddie My Eagle going on to land a decent handicap pot at Newbury recently, while the runner-up Looping D'arc has some solid form in the book and one-time Epsom Derby second Ambiente Friendly finished a spot behind in fourth.

The five-year-old son of Westerner looked to be crying out for a stiffer test of stamina on that occasion and it's no shock to see connections now opt to move him up five furlongs on this more galloping track.

He steps into handicap company off a workable mark of 101, while trainer Tom Lacey, who has a £30.83 level-stakes profit with his runners on their handicap debuts, also reaches for first-time cheekpieces to eke out further improvement.

Land Of Punt – 2pt Win

Odds – 7/2

Over at Newcastle this evening, Tactical Blitz should have more to offer in the Bet 10 Get 40 With BetMGM Handicap (5.30).

The Archie Watson-trained sprinter hasn't looked completely straightforward in three runs to date, but he's shown a useful level of ability, as proven when runner-up behind a fair type at Southwell last time.

The winner that day has since followed up back at the same track before disappointing on his handicap debut but there were excuses for his latest effort, and I suspect he's a decent yardstick.

Whilst an opening mark of 69 is no gimme, it's interesting that top connections have opted to geld their son of the speedy Mohaather and I'm hopeful that might just be the making of him.

He's drawn against the often-favoured near side rail in stall ten and with further progress on the cards, I'm happy to take a small chance that he can take another step in the right direction here.

Tactical Blitz – 1pt Win

Odds – 10/3
