King’s best bets - 3rd March 2026
Sam King is back with two selections on Tuesday…
Both selections come from Newcastle on Tuesday and I'm hopeful that the unexposed Green Bonnet might be the one to side with in the opening Border Minstrel Sunday Lunch Novices' Limited Handicap Hurdle (2.05).
Trained by the Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore partnership, Green Bonnet looks like the type who has a better effort in her and it's likely that she'll be cherry-ripe following 167 days off.
The daughter of Dartmouth was given plenty to do when third at Kelso last time and after just four runs, she ought to have plenty more to offer now stepping slightly back up in trip.
The booking Conner McCann, who is good value for his 7lb claim, looks like a major bonus and at the current prices, she looks a fair each-way bet at around the 5/1 mark.
Green Bonnet – 1pt Each-way
Odds – 5/1
Later on the card, Broderick looks to hold an interesting profile in the Get Raceday Ready Handicap Hurdle (3.35).
Jennie Candlish's hurdler hinted at a return to form when keeping on from off the pace to finish a fair fourth at Ludlow last time out and it's interesting he's been fairly strong in the early markets this morning.
His sole success over hurdles came in maiden company at this venue last January and having landed that when rated 113, there's no doubt that he's well-treated off his current mark of 101.
This step up to two miles and seven furlongs could unlock more improvement and with Sean Quinlan taking over from a conditional in the saddle, he gets the nod to come out on top.
Broderick – 1pt Win
Odds – 10/3
