King’s best bets - 14th February 2026

Sam King is back with two selections on Saturday.

There's plenty of racing to get stuck into this afternoon, with Ascot putting on Grade 1 action and Haydock hosting a bundle of classy contests.

The Betfair Exchange Handicap Hurdle (2.25) looks like a typically competitive Ascot handicap, and I completely understand why Listentoyourheart sits at the top of the market for Dan Skelton following her Windsor success.

However, Olly Murphy's Act Of Authority shaped quite nicely back in fourth in that Windsor contest and might prove capable of reversing the form on these more favourable terms.

He came from an uncompromising position to keep on nicely into fourth and arguably would have been closer but for finding himself short of room up the straight. The extra distance this afternoon combined with Ascot's stiffer nature should bring about some extra improvement, while the return to softer ground shouldn't pose any issues given, he was a winner on soft at Wetherby in 2024.

He's now 5lb better off with the reopposing Listentoyourheart and ought to be right in contention.

Act Of Authority – 1pt Each-way

Odds – 13/2

Later on the card, the progressive Heart Over Head must have a huge chance in the Betfair Handicap Hurdle (4.10).

The seven-year-old Soldier of Fortune gelding took five efforts to get off the mark, but he's progressed nicely since going up in trip, running out a commanding fifteen-length winner on bottomless ground at Uttoxeter before following up in class at Market Rasen last month.

He raced quite keenly last time out but found plenty when asked in the closing stages and it's probably worth upgrading the performance. A further 2lb rise in tougher company will demand more but he's clearly going in the right direction and should be suited by the way this race develops.

With all that in mind, the 6/1 on offer looks more than fair.

Heart Over Head – 1pt Win

Odds – 6/1
