Goliath delights Graffard in Hong Kong Vase build-up

Francis-Henri Graffard believes that he has Goliath right back to his very best as he bids to end 2025 with a bang in the Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin on Sunday.

With just 3lb covering the top five-rated runners, this year's Hong Kong Vase looks set to be a competitive affair as the likes of defending champion Giavellotto lines up alongside Sosie, Al Riffa, Urban Chic and the Aidan O'Brien-trained Los Angeles.

Goliath failed to land a blow in the same contest on his Hong Kong debut twelve months ago but Francis-Henri Graffard, who has enjoyed something of a stellar season following wins in the Breeders' Cup, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and Japan Cup, firmly feels his five-year-old gelding is in a good place heading into Sunday's assignment.

"He's really well now and while he has had far from a perfect season, he could finish off in style," Graffard said. "He is in terrific form and this week you are seeing the Goliath that we all love to see. He is a happy horse who is moving very well and I'm delighted with him."

The son of Adlerflug returned to winning ways in Group 1 company with a smooth success over last year's Hong Kong Vase runner-up Dubai Honour in the Grosser Preis von Baden but will be looking to bounce back from a lesser effort in the Breeders' Cup Turf in Del Mar.

Graffard revealed he was more than happy with stall four for Goliath, while rivals Giavelloto (6), Urban Chic (3) and Al Riffa (2) have all be handed a single-figure draw alongside the Andre Fabre-trained Sosie, who will begin his challenge from gate eight under Maxime Guyon.
